Starting College in 2024

Written by:

Hi Lovely! I went through college back in 2014-2018… here are a few things to keep in mind as a thriving black woman or beyond binary queen.

  1. Embrace your identity and cultural heritage: College is a time of self-discovery, and it’s important to embrace and celebrate your identity as a black woman. Connect with black student organizations, participate in cultural events, and seek out spaces where you can share your experiences and learn from others. Your heritage is a source of strength and resilience that can enrich your college experience.
  2. Build a support network: College can sometimes feel overwhelming, so it’s crucial to build a support network. Seek out mentors, both within your academic department and through organizations that support black students. Connect with other black women on campus, join study groups, and form friendships with like-minded individuals who can provide encouragement, advice, and a sense of community.
  3. Take advantage of resources: Colleges offer a wide range of resources to support student success. Familiarize yourself with academic support centers, tutoring services, career development programs, counseling services, and any other resources that can help you thrive. Don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance whenever you need it.
  4. Prioritize self-care: College life can be demanding, and it’s essential to prioritize self-care to maintain your well-being. Set aside time for activities that rejuvenate you, such as exercising, practicing mindfulness, pursuing hobbies, or spending time with loved ones. Taking care of your mental, physical, and emotional health will contribute to your overall success and happiness in college.
  5. Challenge stereotypes and advocate for yourself: Unfortunately, stereotypes and biases still exist in various forms. Be prepared to challenge stereotypes about black women and actively engage in conversations that promote understanding and inclusivity. Advocate for yourself by speaking up when necessary, whether it’s in the classroom, within organizations, or in any other aspect of campus life. Your voice matters, and you have the power to make a positive impact.

Remember, starting college is an exciting chapter in your life, and you have the potential to achieve great things. Stay focused, stay true to yourself, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Best of luck on your college journey!
