Making Friends in a New City

Written by:

Hi boo! We made it to that new city, with a new job or new apartment… Now we’re sitting at home on a Friday with no one to call! I’ve been here so many times. Here are my tips to putting yourself out there even as an introvert!

  1. Explore community and social activities: Get involved in community events and social activities that align with your interests. Attend local meetups, join hobby or sports groups, volunteer for local organizations, or take classes or workshops. These activities provide opportunities to meet like-minded individuals and make connections based on shared interests.
  2. Utilize online platforms and social media: Take advantage of online platforms and social media to connect with people in your new city. Join local Facebook groups or online forums centered around your hobbies or interests. Use apps designed for meeting new people or finding activity partners in your area. Online platforms can be a convenient way to initiate conversations and make initial connections before meeting in person.
  3. Be open and approachable: Approach new situations with an open and friendly attitude. Smile, make eye contact, and be approachable in your interactions with others. Strike up conversations with people you encounter, whether it’s at a coffee shop, in a park, or during community events. Small talk can lead to meaningful connections, so be open to starting conversations and getting to know new people.
  4. Join local clubs or organizations: Look for local clubs, organizations, or groups that align with your interests, such as book clubs, fitness groups, or cultural organizations. Participate in their activities and attend their events. These groups often provide a structured environment for meeting people with similar passions and can be a great way to form new friendships.
  5. Reach out to acquaintances and colleagues: If you have acquaintances or colleagues in your new city, don’t hesitate to reach out and let them know you’re looking to make new friends. They might have connections or be willing to introduce you to their social circles. Attend social gatherings or outings with your new acquaintances, as these events can be opportunities to meet more people and expand your network.

Remember, making new friends takes time and effort. Be patient and persistent in your approach, and don’t be discouraged by initial setbacks or rejections. Building meaningful friendships often requires investing time and energy, so be proactive and willing to take the initiative in organizing social outings or inviting others to join you in activities. Good luck in making new friends and building a fulfilling social network in your new city!
